Follow Up has got to be one of the most essential Elements in all aspects of business! Many times people throw out so much up front energy and they don’t come back and pick up the business! Often people are scared to follow up. They are afraid the prospect may say no. They are afraid they will mess it up or they are not sure what to do. Well let’s knock these myths and misconceptions down because when it gets right down to things, if we do not follow up — we do not get paid! A bad follow up it better then NO follow up! But we will move way past that! Here are several key areas you will want to cover when you follow up with cold market prospects so you can collect a check for all the hard work you have done!
So lets break it down! You meet someone. You are out grocery shopping, getting gas, at a restaurant or the movies and you meet someone you strike a cord with. You prospect them and get their contact info…. NOW WHAT? LOL!
How to Follow Up with Your Network Marketing Prospects
Send a Follow Up Text.
Usually right after I meet someone I will send a quick follow up text. Something simple like
“Hey There John! It’s Summer! We just met at the Cheesecake Factory. It was great bumping into you! I look forward to touching base later on. Have an awesome night!”
That’s it! Now they have my number and we are good to go!
Reconnect with in 24 Hours.
This is were things start to get rolling. Now a little bit of time has passed. And when I say a little, I mean 24 hours, 48 at the max. Timing is important. You don’t want too much time to pass. If you wait too long they may not remember you!
You can choose how you want to reconnect be it a call or a text message. I usually prefer to call but if that’s to scary start with texting. So here is how the call goes… I have 1 goal and 1 goal only. I want to get a time to meet with them. I find that is usually the best way we can start to talk further and start building a relationship. I never really invite them to a home party or hotel meeting. The odds of them showing up are like 1 in 100! So lets stack the offs in your favor!
When you make the call/ text you are only going to say hello, recap that you all had talked about getting together and set up the appointment. If you are calling it would be like a 2 minute call. 5 Minutes at the MAX! And that is if you really get chatting! Here’s how it may sound…
MLM Follow Up Script:
“Hey John! Its Summer! Hey we met the other day at the Cheescake factory! Hey How are you?”
“Awe— Hey Summer! How are you?” (it will take them a second to recall who you are)
“Doing awesome! Am I calling you at an ok time?” (VERY IMPORTANT— you want to clear the time)
“Ok great. I just wanted to circle back up with you. I know we talked about getting together so we could talk some business. What does your schedule look like over the next couple of days?”
“Awe ok—well can you tell me more about what your are doing.”
“Sure—I have a ______________ business. (list your type of business- Health and nutrition, travel, skin care, weight loss, ect) I am expanding here locally and you seemed like someone that would be really fun to work with. I can’t make any promises but if you keep you options open then at least we can get together so I can share with you more about what I have going on. So how does your calendar look over the next couple of days?”
“Awe ok cool. I could meet tomorrow or Friday.”
Then just set the time and place and you are done!
Keys to Effective Follow Up in Network Marketing:
Have you ever heard the phrase “The Drama is in the Details” Well it is!! Right now we are going to get in to 3 Key areas that will dramatically affect how successful this process it for you!
This is so important! It is not so much what you say, but more how you say it. A major part of what you communicate is not in your words! In fact statistics show that only 7% of what we put off is in the words we say. That means the other 93% is a crucial part we must focus on! Unfortunately this often gets overlooked. I can give you a script, but it is how your deliver the message that really will determine the results.
What exactly are we talking about? Are you overly eager, jumpy or seem unsure or do you look comfortable and confidant? Are you “chasing your prospects” or do you come across like a successful busy business owner?
Think About these Key Areas…
- Posture – are you standing tall with your shoulders back?
- Eye contact – are you looking your prospect in the eyes or looking up or at the floor?
- Gestures with hands and arms – Are they purposeful and deliberate? Or are you fidgety and uncomfortable?
- Your Words – Are you speaking slow and clear or fast and anxious?
#2. Use your Wisdom and Discernment
We all have wisdom and discernment. And if you feel you don’t –just ask God for it! “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” James 1:5
When you are prospecting and following up you have got to go with your gut. Don’t just book appointments for the sake of booking appointments. Time is our most valuable resource. If the prospect is wishy washy or seems to push back when you try to get a time to meet with them, then don’t go for the appointment. You don’t want to risk the chance of a “no show” or completely wasting your time if it is not a good fit. If you are not getting a positive open feeling from the prospect send them a video instead.
“Hey do you have 10 minutes right now to check something out?”
“If I send you a video will you watch to learn more?”
Then text it to them and call them after. If they have positive vibes on the follow up then go for the appointment. If they don’t, it’s time for the next one!
#3 The Numbers Are the Numbers!
Yo! This is BIG! Often times people get discouraged because they just don’t understand the numbers. If you contact and prospect 10 people. You may not get all 10 phone numbers. Then out of the numbers you get you definitely will not meet up with all of them. In fact you may sit down with 5 out of 10 or 7 out of 10.
That’s just how it works. Don’t get discouraged, just understand that is part of the process. Of course we will always want to improve our ratios as much as possible by working to master each part of this process. But don’t get bent out of shape if someone drops off. Some people are just flakes—NOT YOUR FAULT! Just do your thing and don’t work about the ones who don’t make the cut!
#4 Confirm Your Appointments
ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS confirm your appointments! Last thing you want is to get no showed! You get all dressed up, drive across town and the little stinker does not even show! No call, no text, no show! BOOOOOO!!
You do not want this to happen. So you always want to confirm! I will usually do a call or text confirmation the day before if it is a morning appointment or the day of if it is later on in the day.
Here is a sample text: “Hey John! I look forward to seeing you today at Panera Bread! See you at 1pm!”
