Do you get nervous before prospecting? The truth is, we all do! I was recently at a conference of several thousand people and the person on stage asked for each person to be honest, and raise their hand if they get nervous before prospecting… The truth is 98% of the people in the audience had their hand in the air! 98%! Wow can you believe it!
So if you get nervous or scared before prospecting. The odds that you will actually go out and prospect decrease dramatically! And since sharing our business with new people is the only way that we grow our business! It is only in our best interest to get good in this area and you overcome the fear that lies behind it! So we’re going to cover three things that will help you get prepared the next time you talk to somebody about your business!
Tip Number #1: Practice Ahead of Time. You want to think about what you’re going to say and plan it out in your mind.
Tip Number #2: Visualize It. When you look at any great athlete, be it Michael Phelps, a professional baseball player, or an olympic athlete. They all visualize! Those that consistently take home the championship. Those that consistently win the gold medal. They are expert visualizers! Now visualization is not something that is easy to do.
In fact, it’s easy not to do! But when you play the movie in your mind’s eye of you having success with your prospect. And you’ve already planned out what you will say. The odds of it happening in “reality” are much, much greater!
Tip Number #3: Get in the Zone! Here is how I do that. Make the list, build it long and build it strong. Bust out any old business cards or anything that will help you remember people that you have met in different places. Once you have a good list of fifty or a hundred names down on paper, you’re NOT going to want to reach out to every single person. But it will help you to kind of “get the juices flowing” so that you can go back and cherry pick your top 15 or 20 that you want to connect with at that moment.
Then It’s Time to Jam It Out! Start getting on the phone and Dialing for Dollars, or shooting out text messages, or use your Facebook and send private messages. However you want to do it! The more numbers that you can put up on the board the better off you will be! Often times it seems that it is easy to get nervous if you do things at random. But if you have a ritual that you go through that prepares you for making the calls. And then you slam out 10 or 20 or 30 calls or messages it really seems to be a lot easier.
Now I highly suggest you get in the habit of making a point to contact 2-5 New People each and every day. The more you do it daily– the Easier it will become!
In addition, you will want to follow up with two to five people every day also. Remember the fortune is in the follow-up! So get out there… throw your fishing lines in the water! And then make sure that you reel them back in!
