We’re going to talk about the age-old debate!
Do you lead with the product? Or do you lead with the business? For years network marketers have debated this very subject! Some people are super one-sided on leading with the business. Others are very passionate and like to lead with the product. So let’s talk about this…
Something I heard from my friend and mentor Mr. Jonak is that it is actually neither one! You lead with the prospect! You share things based on what you think would resume most with your prospect. Not necessarily what it is that you want to talk about. I think this is a great philosophy! But I also think it depends on you!
You have to talk about what you are comfortable with. If you are not genuine and authentic with it… Your prospect will sniff it out! So you have to be confident and comfortable with what you’re sharing. If you can switch hit and go either way. The best thing is to go with what you think your Prospect would connect with most.
So let’s talk about what to say… Often times when I am meeting people we have a limited time period to connect… we are in line waiting to go in to check out or perhaps pumping gas.
Here is how I usually I start… I just start by saying hello and striking up a conversation. If the person is open and receptive then we keep on talking. Oftentimes I will drop a compliment: I like the shoes, like the purse, like the car, like the Tie, whatever! Find something that you can genuinely say that you like about them. That opens up the conversation and really get some going. Then have some small talk. Usually when I know it is getting close to the time that we will part ways I will ask him this question.
“Hey, I know this seems a little random, but you have a great personality. I have a business here locally and right now I am expanding… Do you happen to keep your options open for other ways of making money outside of what you do?”
When I ask a question they will only give me three answers yes, no, or what is it? If I get any type of positive feedback I will get their contact info. If they are in a profession where they would have a business card I will ask for their card. If not I will take out my phone open it to the section where I would add a new contact and hand them my phone so they can put their contact information in it. Then I am out the door! I will let them know that we can connect up later to talk more about it.
How about if you want to lead with a product? Often a great way is a third-party approach. You share that you have a new product you’re helping Market here in the area. Do they happen to know anybody that might like more energy, better sleep or increased clarity and endurance? When you ask if they know “anybody” it takes the pressure off of them. And allow them to refer you to someone, but most often that person is themselves! Once you ask that question they often will say “Yes! Me!… I want to know!”
Whether you are leading with the product, or the business, most importantly you should come across as genuine and authentic. And if you’re comfortable doing either way, think about what would most connect with your prospect. Just find an approach that works great for you and connect with some new people!
