Have You Ever Thought About Door-Knocking for Your Business? You might have a product or service and it would fit in perfectly in a retail business like a hair salons, chiropractors office, nutrition shop, well… you name it! Have you ever thought about knocking on doors and approaching business owners? Well there are actually quite a few other people who have also had that same thought. So let’s talk about this, and get into the philosophy of why it “will” or “will not” work.
Posture Is Key… One of the things that is really important when you’re talking to prospects is “posture”… How does the prospect see you? If you come into a scenario with a prospect it is very important that they either respect you, or at least think of you as an equal. But if you come into a scenario and the prospect thinks they’re all big and bad, like King Kong. And you are some little fly that’s pestering them. Not a good way to start!
Do You Open the Door Or Not? For example, have you ever been at home when someone knocks on your door? When you open the door if it is a solicitor you have a certain viewpoint of them. You are the homeowner and they are the “sales person”. They want something from you. And you are deciding if you want to even open the door! So the scales are greatly shifted. You are large and in charge and they are hoping you give them the time of day! If on the other hand, a neighbor knocks on your door. You’ll gladly open it, because you view them as a equal. Not as someone that’s bothering or pestering you.
The Same is True for Business Owners. We need to have them view you as an equal. Not somebody that’s approaching them to get something from them.
So How Do We Turn The Scales? Well here are a couple of options for you and they don’t really include “door knocking”! LOL!
Growth Option #1: Talk to People You Are Already Buying From. Do you have someone who you purchase from and you’ve been going there for years? I’m sure you do, we all do! Your hairdresser, Barber, nail person, dry cleaner, your favorite restaurant! All of these are good example of places that you already go to and give your money to. In this scenario, you are the customer! And what do they always say? “The customer is always right!” So just approach these people—you are already in a good situation!
What Do You Say? Hey business owner, I’ve been coming here for quite a few years. And I really like your stuff. However, I also have a business and right now I’m expanding. I’d love to sit down and share more about it with you.”
Why Not Approach Them! You are already giving them your money. They are the ones who have something to lose. And they’re going to listen to you just because you’re a valued customer of theirs. That’s one option.
Growth Option #2: Networking Events. Go online and do a Google search for Networking Events…Every city has them!…Whether it’s a chamber event, or whether it’s a more targeted group like “women in business”, or “young professionals”, ect. Get involved and get out to a networking event.
Growth Option #3: Interest Groups. There are two types of interest groups. The interest groups online, and the groups that meet in person. Interest groups are basically where you get involved with something that you already have an interest in. Whether it’s a cooking club, basketball, poker, crafts, running, whatever it is that you like!
You Get Involved with something do you already have an interest in it. Now whether you’re meeting online like in a Facebook group or whether you are involved in a group where you meet face-to-face.
Your Goal Is To Add Value to the Group. You want to jump in there and answer questions. You want to participate. You want to contribute to the group and the other members will see you as a valued player. It’s going to create a lot of Goodwill and people will get to know you and also respect you.
